Former Detroit Tigers pitcher Gary Knotts tossed a one-hit shutout of Erie on Thursday night.

The SeaWolves fell to Reading on Thursday night in the final regular season meeting between the two clubs 7-0. Phillies starter and former Detroit Tigers pitcher Gary Knotts baffled the SeaWolves tossing a complete game, one-hit shutout.

The Phillies struck first against starter Andrew Kown in the bottom of the first inning. Mike Costanzo doubled on a ball misplayed by Wilkin Ramirez in left and scored on a Jason Hill single for a 1-0 lead. Greg Jacobs doubled home Hill for a 2-0 Phillies advantage.

Reading added to the lead in the bottom of the second. After recording the first out, Kown hit back-to-back batters, Michael Garciaparra and Michael Spidale, to put a pair on base. Greg Golson followed with a three-run home run, his second of the season, for a 5-0 R-Phils lead.

Reading again added a run in the bottom of the third inning. Jacobs led off the inning with his second double of the game and scored on a fielder’s choice, making it 6-0 Reading.

The R-Phils would add their seventh and final run of the night in the fourth. Spidale led off the inning with his sixth triple of the season. Spidale scored on a Costanzo sacrifice fly, making it 7-0.

Kown (4-8) went three innings, allowing six runs, five earned, on five hits. He struck out one and did not issue a walk. Kown dropped to 0-3 against Reading.

The story of the night was Reading’s starter Knotts. Knotts, who pitched with the Detroit Tigers in parts of 2003 and 2004, limited the SeaWolves to three base runners the entire game. He walked Clete Thomas to start the game but retired the next 11 hitters before issuing his second walk of the game to Jeff Larish who led off the fifth. Knotts did not allow a hit until two outs in the seventh when Larish lined a base knock through the right side.

Erie did not get a baserunner passed first base the entire game.

The loss dropped the SeaWolves to 4-8 against the Phillies in 2007.
